SEASHELLS (an attractive and delicate zippered pouch)

seashellsbag
Materials:
  • J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Size 5, 10 balls
  • Steel crochet hook no. 1
  • 1/3 yard buckram.
  • 1/3 yard lining material
  • 11" zipper

Gauge:
1 shell (from sc to sc) measures 1 1/8"; 2 rows of shells measure 1".

Use thread double throughout.

Starting at bottom, make a chain about 15" long (6 ch sts to an inch).

  • 1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 7 dc in next ch (shell is made), skip 2 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 12 inches, ending with a sc. Cut off remaining chain. Now work along opposite side of foundation chain to correspond, ending with sl st in 1st sc made
  • 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * 7 dc in front loop of center dc of next shell, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * around, joining rnd as before. Repeat the 2nd rnd until piece measures 8" deep.

Make a paper pattern to take care of both sides of crocheted piece and lay it aside to be used later.

TAB…..Ch 9.

  • 1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch. Working along opposite side of foundation chain, sc in each st across, making 2 sc where 1st sc was made.
  • 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of 1st 3-sc group, and 7 dc at opposite end of TAB, working these dc in same place as 1st sc of 1st rnd was made. Sl st in next sc on 2nd rnd. Fasten off. Sew tab to zipper.

Lining Instructions:

  1. Insert pieces of paper pattern into crocheted bag and trim pattern if necessary to correspond to size and shape. It is important that pattern be slightly smaller than corresponding crocheted piece.
  2. Cut lining material exactly like pieces of paper pattern. Cut buckram in exact shape of paper pattern but a generous ¼" smaller all around.
  3. Place buckram over lining material, turn edges about 3/8" over buckram all around and pin, so that the lining is taut and buchram cups slightly. Sew edges of lining to buckram with over-and-over stitches, being careful not to have stitches show on right side. The lined side of buckram is the lining of your bag. (To prevent transparency in a bag made of motifs or of lacy texture…..line the other side of buckram,
sewing with slip stitches along edges and keeping curve of buckram.)
Assemble the pieces of lined buckram by sewing with small over-and-over stitches.
  4. Pin the tape of the zipper in place to outer side of bag form (thus zipper will come between bag form and crochet). Sew firmly.
  5. Insert bag form into crocheted bag and slip stitch along edges.
