Beginning at tip, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as a dc), 2 dc in ring,
* ch 2, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * 3 more times, ch 2, sl st to
3rd st of ch-3 (5 dc-groups).
Hereafter, in working groups of dc, pick up only the back loop of
dcs of previous rnd.
2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as a dc), dc in same st
where sl st was made (this is an increase), * 1 dc in next dc, 2
dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in first dc of next group, repeat from
* around completing 5 groups. Join last ch 2 with sl st to 3rd
st of ch-3.
3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made,
*1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in last dc of same group, ch 2,
2 dc in first dc of next group, repeat from * around. Join last
ch 2 to 3rd st of ch-3.
4th and 5th rnds: Work as for 3rd
rnd, increasing in first and last dc of each group and making ch-3
(instead of ch-2) between groups. Join.
6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made,
* 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * to end of group,
ch 4, 2 dc in 1st dc of next group, repeat from first
* of this rnd all around (17 dc in each group). Join last ch 4 to
ch-3.
7th rnd: Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made,
*dc in each of next 15 dc, 2 dc in last dc, ch 4, 2 dc in 1st
dc of next group, repeat from * around. Join last ch 4 to ch-3.
8th rnd: Ch 4, * skip 1 st, dc in next st, ch
1, repeat from * around, joining last ch 1 to 3rd st
of ch-4 (58 sps).
9th rnd: Ch 5, * dc in next dc, ch 2, repeat from
* around. Join last ch 2 to 3rd st of each ch-5.
10th, 11th and 12th rnds: Ch
6, and make dc in each dc of previous rnd making ch 3 between dcs.
Join as before.
13th rnd: Ch 6, * dc in next dc, ch 3, repeat
from * 2 more times, **skip next sp, make 3 dc in center st of next
sp, ch 3, skip next dc, dc in next dc, make 9 more ch-3 sps, then
ch 3, repeat from ** around ( five 3 dc-groups are started). Join
as before.
14th rnd: Ch 6, * dc in next dc, ch 3, repeat
from * 2 more times, **2 dc in next dc of dc-group, 1 dc in next
dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 3, repeat from ** around. Join as before.
15th to 19th rnds incl: Work in this
manner, making ch-2 sps over sps of previous rnd, and increasing
in dc-groups in the same way as increases were made in groups in
3rd to 7th rnds incl. (19 dc in each group
on 19th rnd). Join rnds as before. Do not break off but
continue with brim.
Brim:
1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in each sp and dc in each
dc. Join with sl st. Hereafter, pick up only the back loop of each
dc of previous rnd.
2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 3, dc in each
dc. Join with sl st.
4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc, increasing 1 dc
in every 5th dc (to increase, make 2 dc in 1 st). Join.
5th rnd: Ch 3, dc in dc, increasing in every 6th
dc. Join.
6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc. Join and break off
thread.
To shape brim, hereafter work in rows breaking off thread
at end of each row and attaching to beginning of previous row, as
follows:
1st row: From the joining of last rnd, measure
off 5 inches toward the left, attach thread at this point and make
1 sc in each of next 2 dc, 1 half dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in
each dc to within 5 inches from joining, then 1 half dc in each
of next 2 dc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st in next dc. Break
off.
2nd row: Attach thread to 1st dc at
beginning of 1st row, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, 1 half
dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in each dc increasing 1 dc in every
7th dc to within 5 dc from end of previous row, then
1 half dc in each of next 2 dc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st
in next dc. Break off.
3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd
row but without increasing. Break off.
5th row: Attach thread to 8th dc at
beginning of 4th row, and work as before, increasing
in every 9th dc, and working to within 13 dc from end
of 4th row, then 2 half dc, 2 sc, and 1 sl st. Break
off.
6th and 7th rows: Same as 5th
row, but without increasing. Break off.
To make brim stiff, work sc closely together all around
edge of brim, holding along wire and working over it so that it
is completely covered. Fasten wire neatly at back and complete work
with 1 rnd of sl sts.
Cord:
Holding thread double, make a chain about 48" long,
turn and make 1 sl st in each ch. Break off. Pass cord through 3rd
row of brim, passing it under 2 dc and over 2 dc, etc. and tie into
a bow at right front.
