We're just back from Wasoon and getting ready for Convergence. The July/August newsletter is being put together in mid June so it can go in the mail as soon as we get back from Cincinnati. Just as Gertrude Thibeault promised, Wasoon was between the snow and the black flies. The three degrees C on Sunday morning sure felt cool but the weather was great as was the whole weekend. See "Wasson Report". The big New York buy has arrived, plus more Rayon Lustre. Yarn is everywhere! Don & Marie Easing the Strain Marie gleaned this tip from the Internet weaving list. During the course of a weaving project, if you have wear and tear on your edge warp threads as draw-in occurs, try this idea. In your reed, space the first and last four warp threads a little further apart than the rest of your warp. For instance, if you are going to sley two threads per dent, then spread those four beginning and ending threads, placing only one per dent. Marie has found this little trick particularly helpful with Rayon Chenille warps. It definitely reduces stress at the warp edges. Stress reduction is always a good thing! Rather than a fringe, try this idea for a change. A customer at Wasoon was wearing a beautiful hand-woven silk and silk chenille stole that used this technique. Each end of the warp was hemmed (you could weave with finer yarn in the hem area). Prepare some small metal washers by wrapping them with yarn using a blanket stitch around the edge of the washers. Stitch these wrapped washers in groupings, as desired, across each end of your stole or scarf. An added benefit to this interesting finish is that the weight of the washers tends to hold a stole over your shoulder very nicely, preventing slipping.
The members of Guild Aurore Boréale in Kapuskasing staged an unbelievable weekend for weavers at Wasoon 2000, May 26 - 28th. The entire conference took place at the Centre de Loisirs, which is a great facility. The workshops covered a diverse range of topics that had attendees wishing they had more time. Friday evening saw the opening of the OHS Traveling Exhibit "Contained Images". The pieces selected are outstanding and were displayed very effectively in the Gallery space at the Centre. A few images from the exhibit are on our web site. The host guild members staged a fun fashion show as part of the Saturday banquet. The costumes were amazing and the antics of the models hilarious. The ladies of the guild provided all the very enjoyable meals right at the center. At every meal we received unique table favours. Thanks for a great time! All the yarn mentioned in the last issue has arrived ....it's everywhere! Marie has dyed and hand painted samples of the 550 and 3,000 yd/lb Rayon Chenille and found both dye very well. The 1300 yd/lb Rayon Chenille is by Amilon of Wallace, North Carolina. This mill was set up two years ago as the US subsidiary of Lonfil the noted Italian Chenille producer. All these weights are available on the cone (2-5 lbs), on one pound tubes, 4 oz. dye skeins (four ties), in any of our ten chenille hand dyed colours or the four variegated colourways. Speaking of variegated we are planning to change the Chenille colourways effective September 2000. The new Wine Country will replace Very Berry. Iceberg will be changed to have more blue tones. Autumn Rhapsody, Flame and Seascape will remain as they are. The variegated colours in the Rayon Lustre line will not change. The shade cards for the mill dyed 550-yd/lb rayon chenille are still in the works. This line will have a dozen colours. Lee-Anne the young lady who works with Marie is an avid knitter. Lee-Anne did some samples with this yarn and just loved it. She tells us "It handled as smooth as butter" July/ August Specials The Great early Summer Undyed Bonanza - Continues ..
