Hello!

Where has the summer gone? In just two weeks we'll be at the first Fall Show, Knitters' Fair 2000 in Waterloo.

This issue celebrates the first anniversary of Yarns Plus News ! Last September all the copies went out by snail mail. For this issue almost 80% will be sent over the internet. We really appreciate the kudos you have given.

Since Convergence we have been busy skeining, dyeing and winding off to be ready for the fall.

Marie has new shades in the Rayon Chenille scarf kit line. The red with a hint of gold is right in step with Fall 2000 colours. Wine Country is based on our latest variegated yarn colour and was very popular at Convergence.

Since the last newsletter we have made quite a few changes and additions to our products. Be sure to check "What's New".

Beginner’s Tip - Colour Challenge

Working with a variety of colors can sometimes become rather daunting. Value contrast is the most important quality in designing with color.

To quickly and fairly accurately determine the values of the colors of yarn you are considering for your next project, you could simply lay them on a scanner and scan without colour for a range of grays to appear. You can also use a photocopier in the same manner to give you a range of grays. Then you can make colour choices that blend or contrast as you wish.

Another aid to determine the value of a colored yarn is to use a red filter. They are available at many quilting and sewing shops. One favorite is the "Ruby Beholder" - a durable 2" x 6" rectangle of red plastic

Place the yarn across a gray scale. Hold the red filter to your eyes and look at the yarn until the colour seems to disappear and you see only the value or depth of gray. Most books on color include a printed value scale or try your local art supply store.

issue7_knitting.jpg (6543 bytes) Knitting Pattern - Blue Lace

This blue lace scarf was knit using a "Vine Lace" pattern. Adjust the number of stitches to make the width you would like.

Marie knit it with our violet hand dyed rayon chenille on Brittany 3.75 needles. Any of our chenille would work or you could use Rayon Lustre on the same size needles.

Vine Lace: Worked over a multiple of 9 stitches + 4 extra. 1st and every other row (WS): purl to end. 2nd row: K3, *yo, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, K2, yo, K1; rep from * to last stitch, K1. 4th row: K2, *yo, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, K2, yo,K1; rep from * to last 2 sts., K2. Repeat first to fourth rows.

Crochet Edging:  Add to end of scarf one row of sc. Chain 5, skip 2c., *1dc., chain 3; rep from * to end and 3P4chain 2. Slip stitch into 2nd chain, chain 2, * slip stitch into same stitch as chained into , slip stitch into next and chain 2 rep from *. (This row gives you the final picot edge)

Convergence Report

An event like Convergence is viewed from an entirely different perspective when you are an exhibitor. The organization for moving in was terrific so we were completely set up by four on Wednesday afternoon.

Our spot was the second booth in the main entrance aisle. We were right beside the Convergence 2002, booth so position wise we had it all.

The sales hours provided attendees with lots of time for shopping over the next four days. We were fortunate to have some exclusives and once the word got around, we had weavers buying for themselves and friends who could not attend. With the evenings free, Marie and I were able to enjoy the tours and special events.

It was wonderful to meet in person many of our phone order and email customers. We also introduced our products to many fibre artists who discovered Yarns Plus for the first time. We can now claim to be international with our kits and yarn going home to Britain, Europe and Australia.

A lot of the attendees had the proverbial quandary, so many things to do, so little time.

The Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati did a super job of staging Convergence 2000. Hosting an event of almost 1700 attendees is a huge undertaking. Hats off to the entire Cinci team!

Marie and I went on to Kentucky afterwards and enjoyed a day in the Berea area which included a tour of Churchill Weavers. If you are ever in Kentucky a visit to Berea is a must.

What’s New

Tencel - New sizes, new colours.

Tencel was the talk of Convergence. It was widely discussed in workshops and is, without a doubt, the yarn of the future. In mid August we made major commitment to be the source for Tencel. We have added two new sizes 2/20 and 2/30.

To our hand-dyed and handpainted 3 oz. skein, of 2/10 Tencel, we have added the remaining colours to offer our complete ten colour palette in hand dyed and five colourways in our variegated line.

Solid Colours: Azure, Burgundy, Chino, Gold, Gray, Green, Navy, Purple, Red and Violet. Variegated Colours: Autumn Rhapsody, Blue Tango, Flame, Seascape and Wine Country. New Variegated Colours! As mentioned in the last issue we have discontinued Very Berry replacing it with Wine Country a luscious combination of blue/purple, red/purple and rich burgundy. Iceberg has been replaced with Blue Tango a bright combination of light turquoise, azure and navy. Both combinations are now in stock in Rayon Chenille, Rayon Lustre and Tencel.

Special Buy - Silk Noile

One of our sources came up with a quantity of Silk Noile that they twisted up in a four ply. It appears to be around a 4/8. It has nice hand and that great crunchie sound heard when you squeeze silk. Marie has dyed some and found it takes Procion MX beautifully.

We have a limited quantity priced at $25.00 a pound while stock lasts. Don't miss this one as we can't repeat and it won't last long.

Here are the shows we will be attending in Fall 2000….. Sept 16 - Knitter's Fair 2000, Waterloo Sept 23 - Five Counties, Oakville, Oct 14 - OHS Central Region Seminar Peterborough
