Happy New Year !
We hope 2004 brings you both happiness and good health.
We have been planning changes to the line for the spring
season. Be sure to check out “What’s
New and Coming” . |
Tencel became “the yarn” last year with the addition
of the 2/8 dyed line in 28 colors. We now carry a total of 45 colors
in 2/8 and 2/10 along with undyed Tencel in five sizes. If you have
yet to experience Tencel, we hope 2004 will be the year you try
it.
We appreciate your ongoing support of Yarns Plus as well as your
suggestions and accolades.

From the Distillery |
The JM menswear launch on November 20th was a fun event. All the
men were pinned with an
orchid boutonnière which became a coveted must get during
the coinciding “Holiday Launch Celebration” held that
weekend.
A full calendar of events is planned for the Distillery District
for 2004. The call for musicians for the 10 day Jazz Festival in
May closes January 31st. We’ll keep you posted on what will
be the “Signature Event” for the District in ‘04.
When you visit the Distillery District be sure to drop in and say
hello to Marie in Studio 105, Case Goods Building, 55 Mill Street,
Toronto. Wednesday—Sunday noon to 5 p.m.

What's New &
Coming!
New Variegated Hand Painted Rayon Chenille
Two new colorways of 1450 yd/lb Rayon Chenille in two ounce skeins
are now in stock. Plum is a magic blend of purples, from a dark
bluish tone through a burgundy shade to a very light purple that
all appear to be made for each other. Tangerine is a four color
extravaganza for spring. This combination of chino, plus a light
and dark peach is really set off with a stunning mid purple/blue.
In addition we will continue to offer Flame, Forest, Mountain Mist,
Sandstone, Seascape and Twilight.
New Variegated Hand Painted Tencel
Plum and Tangerine are also available in 4200 yd/lb 2/10 Tencel
done up in three ounce skeins. We will continue to offer Flame,
Forest, Mountain Mist, Sandstone, Seascape and Twilight.
New Tencel hand painted variegated warps
With the addition of Plum and Tangerine our line of hand painted
variegated warps expands to ten colorways for 2004. Also available
are Flame, Forest, Mountain Mist, Ocean Breeze, Red Mix, Sandstone,
Seascape and Twilight. Before Christmas Marie put a Tangerine warp
on the Harrisville at the studio. Before she could weave them off
they were all sold. Each warp is chained to be loom ready and will
yield two 8” x 68” scarves. Each warp requires a 1/2
lb. mill dyed color as weft.
Two new Rayon Chenille Scarf Kit Combos!
Plum and Tangerine are also being added to the Rayon Chenille scarf
kit line. Other colorways available are: Flame, Forest, Mountain
Mist, Ocean Breeze, Red Mix, Sandstone, Seascape and Twilight.
Each scarf kit includes a hand painted, loom ready, chained warp
with two skeins for weft that will yield two 7 x 72 inch scarves
.
In the future….
Two Tencel goodies that we are told will be arriving in the spring.
2/8 Tencel space dyed in a number of colorways plus a heavier Tencel
in mill dyed colors. When they are announced ,we’ll have them.
Prices……
The good news is no price increases for the immediate future. Last
July we decreased prices on Tencel to reflect market and currency
changes. So far we have not received word from our sources of any
expected price increases. We are pleased we can continue to offer
you quality, value priced products.
We
may just have it?
When we buy mill end lots of rayon chenille we often end up
with smaller quantities of some colors. When the quantity
of a color on a shade card gets low we may drop it from the
card but still have stock. One of these colors may be just
what you need for a project. Just call, we’ll be glad
to send a reeling for you to check.
Yarns Plus will be closed !
We’re going on seminar, so Yarns Plus will be closed
from Friday January 16th to Tuesday January 27th. Orders received
to January 14th will be shipped before we close.

A classic
weaving book—still in print! |
Susan Misiewicz of Ajax, Ontario was visiting the Distillery District
last fall and dropped into Marie’s studio. In conversation
she mentioned her grandmother Marguerite Porter Davison had written
a book on weaving patterns entitled “ A Handweaver’s
Pattern Book”.
Marie recognized the title immediately as a standard in the weaving
community and considers it a must have for any weaver’s library.
Marie has two copies one from the ninth printing in 1971 and the
other from the twenty-seventh printing in 1990.
From the dust cover….
Mrs. Davison began her career at Berea College under the guidance
of Mrs. Anna Ernberg when the latter was encouraging the mountain
people to bring forth their traditional colonial weaving patterns.
As Mrs. Ernberg’s assistant Mrs. Davison became thoroughly
familiar with these well-established patterns.
Despite the cares of raising a family and of time generously given
to numerous worthy causes, she engaged extensively in weaving, teaching
and lecturing.
Following Convergence in Cincinnati in 2000 Marie and I took a
few days to visit Kentucky. We visited the weaving studio at Berea
College along with Churchill Weavers who are also in Berea.
Unlike so many older books that go out of print and are near impossible
to get, “A Handweaver’s Pattern Book” is still
being printed. More info is available at spenship.com
