Procion MX Dyes-Direct Application

Wear rubber gloves, apron or old clothes. Wear mask when mixing dye powder. (see safety guidelines)
Utensils used for dyeing should NEVER be used for food preparation.

Supplies:

  • Procion MX dye powder
  • Urea
  • Salt
  • Sodium carbonate (PH up)

Method:

  • Mix a solution of 5 tbsp. sodium carbonate and 4 litres (approx. 1 ½ gallons) of warm water (95 degrees).
  • Soak yarns for hand-painting in this solution for about 15-20 minutes. (This solution can be saved and reused several times.) After soaking, wearing rubber gloves, wring out yarn. DO NOT RINSE.
  • Mix dye solution, (dye powder + salt), in a jar. Amount of dye powder and salt will vary with strength of colour you desire, and also with the type of yarn you are dyeing. Experiment and keep good records of your formulas.
  • Use approximately 1 tsp. dye powder, 1 tsp. urea + 1 tbsp. salt to 1 cup of water.
  • Cover working space with plastic, (medium or heavy weight roll purchased from Canadian Tire). Spread out yarns and paint with your dye solution, using sponge-type paint brush. Choose a size of brush appropriate to your project.
  • Cover yarn with plastic and batch for 24 hours.
  • Rinse yarn thoroughly in room temperature water. Change the rinse water a couple of times. Then wash HOT, above 140 degrees, with a little soap (Synthrapol) for 5-10 minutes. I soak in aluminum pot on the stove with a drop of soap, checking to be sure the water reaches 140 degrees. Remove from hot water and rinse 2-3 times and water will be clear. Hang to dry.
