Procion MX Dyes-Immersion Method

Wear rubber gloves, apron or old clothes. Wear mask when mixing dye powder. (see safety guidelines)
Utensils used for dyeing should NEVER be used for food preparation.

Supplies:

  • Procion MX dye powder
  • Salt
  • Sodium carbonate (PH up)

Method:

  • Wet and wash your yarn thoroughly.
  • Mix 1-2 cups of salt into a pail, (approx. 2 gallons), of lukewarm water (75-95 degrees).
  • Mix dye powder separately in a small amount of water. Amount of dye powder will vary according to the shade of the colour you'd like, a medium shade usually requires from 2-3 tsp. of dye. Be very sure that all the dye powder is completely dissolved. It may be necessary to pour this dye mixture through a piece of old panti-hose to sieve out any undissolved particles. Through experience you will know what colours will need this extra care.
  • Add the dye mix to your salt water and thoroughly mix together.
  • Add your yarn and stir gently. I usually dye 5 or 6, 4-oz. skeins in a bucket. Some colours seem to need more room for agitation than others. Wait 15-20 minutes.
  • Prepare a mixture of warm water and 3 tbsp. of sodium carbonate. Again, be sure the entire chemical is dissolved.
  • Remove the yarn from your salt/water bucket temporarily. Add the sodium carbonate liquid to your dye bath. Again, stir thoroughly mixing the new solution.
  • Place yarn back into the bucket and leave for at least an hour.
  • Remove yarn and rinse a couple of times in warm, room temperature water. Next, wash HOT above 140 degrees, with a little Synthrapol soap for 5-10 minutes. Remove from hot water and rinse again, 2-3 times, in cool water. The water should be completely clear at this stage. Hang yarn to dry.
